About Reserva Natural de Sa Dragonera

Reserva Natural de Sa Dragonera is a small, elongated island situated in the Balearic Islands archipelago, just off Mallorca’s western tip. Declared a natural reserve in 1995, it spans roughly 2.4 square kilometers and serves as a sanctuary for Mediterranean flora and fauna, most famously the endemic Lilford's wall lizard (Podarcis lilfordi balearica), which inspired the island's dragon-like name. The island’s terrain is characterized by rugged cliffs, rocky coves, and sparse woodland dominated by mastic trees and Mediterranean scrub. Historically, Sa Dragonera was inhabited briefly but has remained largely untouched, preserving its natural landscape. Visitors access the island by boat from the nearby town of Sant Elm on Mallorca. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy a network of well-marked hiking trails that lead to various historical watchtowers, cliffside lookouts, and the island’s highest point, Es Pantaleu, from which panoramic views of Mallorca and the open sea unfold. The reserve's waters offer excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities amidst rich marine biodiversity. Its protected status prohibits overnight stays and motorized vehicles, keeping Sa Dragonera a tranquil refuge for wildlife and hikers alike. The combination of breathtaking scenery, rare species, and cultural remnants makes it a must-visit for nature lovers and those seeking peaceful coastal adventure in the Mediterranean.
